Jay built this house for William Scarbrough, one of the principal owners of the Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The house is at 41 M. L. King Blvd. (formerly Broad Street). Soon after the home was completed, President Monroe stayed during his tour of the South in May 1819, and there was a gala dinner party and dance held there in his honor.
